Working with Formulas in a Cell

We will use a number of formulas to obtain data about each students current grade

To start we will find the sum of the students points to date.  Click in cell E4, this is the Total cell for   Student 1

On the Home tab find the AutoSum button and click on it.

Note that in the box nest to the tree symbols at the top of the spreadsheet a formula appears indicating that we are adding cells B4 through D4 together.

Click on the green check mark next to the formula and in E4 you will see the total for the three cells.

Using the Copy Handle

In the lower right hand corner of the E4 cell you will see a black square, this is the copy handle.  The copy handle will copy the content of the cell to cells adjacent to the cell selected.

When you are on the copy handle the cross hairs will change to look  like this.

Once you see the copy cursor drag the downward to cell E6 . When you release the mouse the sum of each row will appear.  Your sheet should look like the one below.

When you have completed copying the formula your spreadsheet should look like this,

To determine the students current grade point average you need to divide the total points they have by the total points available.  Click on the F4 cell in in the box next to the box at the top of the spread sheet type =(E4/E8)

The formula will look like the one at the right.

Click on the checkmark to complete the  process and see the students current average.  To determine each current grade you must manually enter the formula like the one above.  The difference is you must change the first cell reference to the current students total cell.

To determine individual project averages click in cell B9.  In the box at the top of the spreadsheet type the following =average(

With the cursor inside of the B4 cell (make sure that the cursor looks like the one at the right, left click and drag to cell B6.  Add ) to the end of the formula.  The formula should look like the on at the right. Click on the check mark to enter the results of the formula into the cell.

Copy the formula as explained at the bottom of the previous page,  Copy the formula to cells C9 and D9.  When you complete this step your spreadsheet should look like this.
