Quizzes: Frequent quizzes are given throughout the semester. All quizzes will be open note, closed book and will include material from the reading assignments as well as the material presented in class. Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class. If you are not in class when the quizzes are handed out, you will not be allowed to take the quiz. This means that it is very important for you to come to class on time! Quizzes cannot be made up. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester to allow for some absences.
Tests: There will be two tests and a final during the semester. Tests are not open note. If you are absent, you will be able to take a make-up exam in the testing center. You must take the make-up exam within two weeks of the original test date or you will get a zero for the exam. Test grades are worth half of the total class grade.
Labs/Homework: Labs and homework assignments are due at the beginning of the class period. Late labs and homework assignments will have 20% deducted from the score. I will not accept any labs or homework assignments more than two weeks after their due date. If you are absent, you can e-mail the assignment to me. Please see me if you need help with your labs!
Grading Policy: Grades are based 50% on tests, 25% on labs, and 25% on quizzes. Grades are awarded according to the following percentages:
A: 90 – 100%
B: 80 – 89%
C: 70 – 79%
D: 60 – 69%
Classes will consist of a lecture explaining computers and their use, and labs for in-class practice of what you've learned.
Topics covered include:
- Computer Terminology
- Computer Components
- Input/Output
- Basic Desktop Applications
- Open source software
- Internet
- How to create and publish web pages
- Communications and Networks
- Career options in computer science and technology
- Computer Security
Attendance:
You are expected to attend class! You are expected to attend class on time! If you have more than three unexcused absences or are tardy during the semester, your grade will be lowered one letter grade. After six unexcused absences you may be dropped from the class with a failing grade at the discretion of the instructor.
Withdrawal Policy!
You may withdraw yourself from the class up to week 10. After that you are committed to complete the class.
Behavior:
You are expected to conduct yourself as an adult at all times. You will show respect for your fellow students and instructor. In particular, you should make sure your activities do not disturb the classroom setting. Talking while the instructor is lecturing, having a cellphone or pager beeping, or leaving the classroom in the middle of a lecture is distracting to the other students. During the lecture you are expected to be listening to the lecture and not doing other class work or using the computer.
If you have any questions, feel free to call or e-mail me, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
