June 16:  We will overnight in the Hotel Melodia.

June 17: We will live the hotel at 3:30am.  We will fly to Iquitos.  We will boat up the Amazon and the Tahayo Rivers to the Amazon Jungle Lodge.  We will eat lunch, have a lodge orientation, afternoon excursions, dinner and evening excursions.

June 18:  We have many things to do and see, being a zone of rich ecodiversity.  Some  of the most popular activities include: riding the canopy zipline between canopy platforms; swimming with pink dolphins and listening to the sounds of aquatic animals by hydrophone; taking ecursions by foot or canoe to observe monkeys, birds and other wildlife; hiking in frog valley searching for poison dart frogs; visiting native villages or having sessions with a native shaman; and piranha fishing.  Private guides will be available, at no extra charge, to help you customize your itinerary to better meet your needs and interests.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served daily.
A typical day at the lodge could include:
6am -- Wake up
6:15am -- Sunrise bird watching by boat
8:30am -- Breakfast
10am - 1pm -- Excursions
1:30pm -- Lunch & siesta
3pm -- Afternoon excursion
6:30pm -- Dinner
8pm -- Night Excursion

You may choose any of this you wish.  You can also sleep in, relax in the lodge's hammocks, read while listening to the jungle sounds, or tweek the schedule to fit special requests.

June 19-20: Research center lodge, La Cia http://www.perujungle.com/research.html
Hiking primate conservation trail grid, swim in Dolphin Lake, etc.
June 21: return to main lodge and continue with excursions.  In the evening there will be a farewell native fiesta.
 
June 22: Morning excursion.  Afternoon boat to Iquitos.  Lodging in Iquitos, Hotel Dorado 3 star.  Breakfast & Lunch.

June 23: Boat to Iquitos, fly to Lima and continue to Cusco.  We will have an afternoon tour of Sacsahuaman Natinoal Park adn other sites near Cusco.  We will overnight in teh Hotel Centenario or another hotel of equal quality.  Breakfast will be provided, but we will purchase our own lunch and dinner.  There are many interesting restaurants in Cusco.

June 24:  We will attend the Inti Raymi celebration with box seating.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

June 25:  We will take the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu.  We will have a guided tour of the ruins.  Hotel Machu Picchu Inn or its equal will provide our lodging.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

June 26:  The gates to Machu Picchu open at 7am.  Busses from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu begin running at 6:30am.  In the afternoon we will take the Vistadome train to Cusco.  We will overnight in the Hotel Centenario or its equal.  Breakfast and lunch will be included, and dinner is usually served on the train.

 June 27:  Fly to Lima.  Overnight flight to O'Hare.  Breakfast is included.

Answers to some FAQs

Documents:  the only document required is a tourist passport.  Please bring two copies of your passport picture page for help in reconfirming flights and as entrance requirements for the reserve.  No visa is required.  No vaccination certificate is required.  In AE's 19 years of working in this region, they have not yet had a traveler become sick with a tropical disease.  Contact us for information.

Clothes for the Jungle:
 Long and short pants, long sleeved shirts and tee shirts, rain gear, hat with brim, swimsuit, sneakers and hiking shoes (AE has jungle rubber boots in various sizes available for loan), canoe enthusiasts like reef walkers or water moccasins.  Daytime high tempuratures are 80-88 degrees F.

Clothes for the Andes:  Be prepared to dress in layers as the temperature can quickly change b/w 45 and 75 degrees F.  Evenings can get down to freezing.  A good windbreaker, good hiking shoes and sunglasses are recommended.

Other recommended items:  Sunblock, insect repellent, canteen or water bottle, a flashlight with spare batteries, a personal first aid kit, toiletries, a daypack or small backpack.  For Cusco re recommend that you talk to a physician about a prescription for Diamox to help with altitude adjustment.

Optional Items:  Binoculars, elementary school items to donate, camera, vedio camera (the lodge has a generator for recharging batteries).

Money:  Needed for airport taxes, some meals, tips, and optional purchases such as souvenirs.  US currency is good for all of that, but make sure your bills are in virtually new or mint condition.

The traveler understands that wilderness travel has inherent risks and agrees to hold David Zacker, Elgin Community College, and Amazonia Expeditions and all of its employees harmless and free of liability.  The travel further agrees that any disputes arising from the trip must be resolved through binding arbitration handled by the Better Business Bureau of West Florida.
