(Chapter 4 Notes - The Processor Unit

System Unit -  contains the chips and circuits, drives, and other components that enable your computer to processor data.

The System Unit -

    The CPU (examples)

        CU does four functions:

        Alu

Ram - sizes

What does the term 'volitile' mean?

Four areas of memory and there purpose

How an instruction is processed:

The system clock -

How data is represented:

    binary mathematics

    bit

    byte

Codes:

    EBCDIC - used on mainframes
string 8 bits together to form a byte
divide the byte int a zone and digit and put the binary places values on each
(zone indicates whether what is stored in alpha or numeric)
you can store 1 character per byte
If numeric, all zone bits on
If alpha, divide the alphabet into three groups:  A-I, J-R, S-Z
        If A-I - 8, 4 bits on
        If J - R - 8, 4, 1 bits on
        If S - Z, 8, 4, 2 bits on
