Below is a list of the classes that I currently teach.  For a complete list of classes toward the Certificate or Degree, please go to the current college catalog.

Basic Substance Abuse Treatment: SUB 215
This course will introduce the student to the nature of substance use
disorders. This will include the development, symptoms, consequences,
and prevention and treatment of abuse and dependence. Assessment;
methods of treatment; strategies for client engagement and retention;
client and community education; and referral and coordination
with other services providers will be included.

Basic Substance Abuse Pharmacology:  SUB122
This course will address the impact that substances of abuse have on
the neurological functioning of the human organism; the impact of substances
of abuse on other organ systems; the effect of substance use
and addition on behavioral functioning and human development; the
physical process of addition and recovery; the impact neurological and
physical dysfunctions have on assessment and treatment planning;
and the history of classify cations of substances of abuse.

Rules and Regulations:  SUB or FMV 110
This course will apply to the complex regulations, laws, ethical standards,
reporting, and record keeping requirements that apply to chemical
dependence and family violence treatment programs and practitioners.
It will include protocols for program design, program management,
and clinical practice. The clinician’s ethical and mandatory reporting requirements
will also be explored.

Special Populations:  SUB or HUS 125
This course will address special populations in substance abuse and
mental health treatment. Special populations will be identify ed and issues
regarding addiction and mental health; engagement strategies;
treatment planning; and client and community education strategies will
be discussed. Methods to gain cultural competence and to become a
lifelong learner will be addressed.

Field Experience I:  SUB 201
In-residence training is a supervised opportunity for the student to
have first-hand experience in an institutional setting that meets his/her
area of interest. In this setting, it is expected that the student will develop
proficiency and display the skills required to perform adequately on-the-
job. One hundred (100) hours of on-site work is required for this
first experience, as well as weekly class sessions with instructor. Requires
instructor consent to enroll.


Field Experience II: SUB 202
In-residence training is a supervised opportunity for the student to
have first-hand experience in an institutional setting that meets his/her
area of interest. In this setting, it is expected that the student will develop
proficiency and display the skills required to perform adequately on-the-
job.

Field Experience III:  SUB 203
Field experience is an opportunity for the substance abuse counseling
student to complete the additional 200 hours of supervised internship
experience as required for full certification by Illinois Alcohol and Other
Drug Certification Association, Inc. Students will have first hand experience
working with clients in a variety of treatment settings. They will
complete the required training and display the skills required of a substance
abuse counselor. Focus will be on practicing the 12 core functions
of the counselor.

Crisis Intervention: HUS or SUB 213
The purpose of this course is to give students a working knowledge of
how to deal with persons in crisis. Special application of the concepts
will be stressed.

Behavior Problems  HUS 211
The purpose of this course is to survey the biological, psychological,
and sociological causes of differences in behavior. Classification and
diagnostic categories will also be discussed.

Experiential Learning in Human Services: HUS or SUB, or ECE 106
This course is designed to promote growth and development as a professional
in the area of Human Services that the student is studying.
The student will participate in a variety of workshops, conferences,
meetings, and/or service-learning opportunities as agreed upon by the
instructor and the student. Verification and reflection of learning will be
assessed by the instructor. This course will be taught as an independent
study. This course is repeatable three times up to 3 credits.

Topics in Human Services: HUS 253:
Mental Health In the Movies - This class looks at various mental health disorders as depicted in the movies.  Topics to be covered include mental retardation, schizophrenia, personality disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and therapist/client relationsships.  Students will be expected to maintain a reflection journal and write a peaper on one type of mental health disorder.
